Are you a new yogi making an annual Christmas list or shopping for your favorite yogi? Be sure to add these 3 essential yoga props to support your practice into 2025 and beyond.

3 Yoga Props You Need (And Why You’ll Love Them)

New to yoga or flowing for years, the truth is a yoga practice isn’t static—it shifts with your energy, mood, and body daily. That’s where props come in. They don’t just make yoga more accessible; they adapt to what you need in each moment, helping you experience qualities yoga guides you toward: balance, depth, and ease.

Here are the three essential yoga props I recommend to every yogi, no matter their experience level.

1. Yoga Blocks: Essential yoga sidekick. These versatile cubes (usually made of foam, cork, or wood) help:

  • Support your body: blocks bring the ground closer so you can stretch without straining.
  • Alignment: a block under your hands or seat can create space and stability.
  • Go deeper: Not just for modifications, use them to deepen stretches and explore new sensations.

Pro tip: Get two blocks, the sturdier the better.

No blocks? That's Ok! You can substitute books, water bottles, chairs, towels.

2. Yoga Strap

  • Improve flexibility: straps act as an extension of your arms and help guide and support you in poses.
  • Stability: a strap can help you hold your foot without compromising balance.
  • Provides support: Use the strap to avoid overexertion.

Pro Tip: Grab 10 feet. It’s longer than standard straps, making it ideal for tall yogis or anyone wanting extra versatility. It’s not required, 6 or feet will do.

No Strap? Substitute a scarf, belt or tie.

3. Yoga Blanket: One of the most multifunctional props in yoga

My all time favorite prop - sometimes called Mexican or festival-style, this blanket style is both durable and malleable, making it a very versatile prop in your practice. Here’s why it’s a must-have:

  • Cushion and support: Fold it for extra padding under your knees or in seated poses.
  • Deep relaxation: Lay it over you during Savasana for warmth, weight and comfort.
  • Aids flexibility: Roll it up for added height, can serve as a yoga block

Protip: Get two ;) I have found these online and sometimes at local grocers like Western Family stores, our local store in Bend is Ray’s.

Will any blanket work? Totally! The more durable the material the more supported you’ll feel, you may even like to try folded towels.

Why These Props Matter:

Yoga is more than working with your body. Supportive props allow your mind and body to find ease and depth, creating space to experience yoga. These props help you:

  • Practice safely
  • Explore poses with ease
  • Find comfort

You don’t need fancy, expensive gear. A pair of blocks, a strap, and a cozy blanket are affordable and incredibly effective investments in your practice.
